If ever there was a bugler who suited the HOF criteria to a “T” it is Bill Hayes. He was a legendary performer in the 50’s era of competitive drum corps, soloing with the Garbarina Skyliners and the Caballeros – where he was the original “Cherry Pink” soloist. In his hands, that awkward Slingerland soprano became a Stradivarius.
Being a good performer is one thing but, one who has the ability to pass on those skills preserves the artistry for generations. Bill Hayes taught greats like Dick Burns and Bill Hightower in national powerhouses of Blessed Sacrament and St. Catherine’s Queensmen – and he did it simultaneously!
He later brought the message south as the instructor for the Miami Vanguard.
He taught those who taught most of the players in this room. His impact on modern bugle playing is as profound as it is immeasurable.
The one … the only … Bill Hayes.
